Usually I am pretty relaxed and groovy about the garden. The zen thing and all is very appealing to me. But now that it's involved in active production, it is extremely water-intensive. Lo and behold, my water bill is HUMONGOUS. Who ever has a large water bill? Usually mine is under $60 a month for Chrissakes! In light of this, I've been relying heavily on Mother Nature to do her share of precipitating for me but she's not really holding up her end of the deal. It hasn't rained measurably in almost two weeks. We've had some short bursts here and there, but the ground is just dry enough to make a hard, soaking rain turn into mostly run off. What we need is a good, long, consistent downpour to really saturate the ground and help the plants last through one or two upper-90-degree days.
So right now, I'm watering sparely yet there isn't much choice. It must be watered. But I'm concerned about relying so heavily on hose water. Not a very organic or ecological choice.
What ever happened to that rain barrel I was going to build? That went right out the window with several other projects, I guess. Now the garden is paying the price.
Crap. We need some rain.
